“I don’t want to do anything, I’ve done enough”. Kevin Tsai, the host of the popular talk show Kangxi Coming 康熙來了, recently announced he’s retiring from hosting. Many of you might be familiar with the Taiwanese comedy-variety show Kangxi Coming which he co-hosted with Dee Hsu. Although the long running show was officially pulled off air in 2016, the series still remains well loved amongst its fans.
2024 marks the show’s 20th anniversary, and fans had high hopes that a relaunch was a possibility. Kevin also hinted previously they’d planned to record a three episode special edition for the show’s 20th. Well that day has come and gone, but instead of some new episodes, what fans got instead was the dampening news that a relaunch just wasn’t happening and Kevin’s retirement announcement to boot!
Kevin Tsai Done with Hosting
According to the host, they’d originally planned to only make a three episode special. But the show’s producer had other ideas and pitched a whole new season to the network instead. “The (longer) length was outside of what we expected to make so we decided the best recourse was just to scrap it”. Moreover, he said that after rewatching old episodes, the jokes and comments everyone made on the show won’t fly nowadays.
“Back then, Dee, the guests and myself had a lot of fun playing freely on the show, but now that programs require proper content, a program messing around with jokes just won’t survive and it was also too tiring for both of us to maintain a balance” he shared.
“I’m retiring and keeping my head down. That’s cause I’ve nothing to do with it now” Whereas everyone expected him to take on hosting gigs again, the 62-year-old said he doesn’t want to do it anymore coz he’s done enough. As for what he’ll be up to next, Kevin appears to be focused on putting out more books and adding to the seven that he’d already released previously.

let’s be real, Xiao S was the star of the show. Kevin was a great co-host, but only to balance her hijinks and keep things moving, which any co-host can pretty much do. the kind of content they produced back then was very cheeky, which much like Kevin mentioned, is a lot harder to pass certain restrictions these days. I’m sad the show won’t be coming back, but Kevin retiring isn’t really such a loss.
