Veteran Hong Kong actor Damian Lau is set to celebrate his 77th birthday on October 14. In recent days, concerns about his health resurfaced after he was spotted attending a movie screening using a cane. Some commented that his right hand appeared stiff and curled, prompting speculation that he may have suffered a second stroke. Lau, who was previously reported to have experienced a stroke, recently addressed the rumors, urging everyone not to worry excessively about his health.
He wrote, “I have never publicly disclosed the name of my illness because I do not want people to develop negative associations because of it.” He added, “Please have a little confidence in me. I am capable of dealing with it.” The actor also apologized to those who had become concerned after seeing the circulating footage though he also mused, “I never expected that even after retirement, my life and activities could still serve this purpose. When I think about it, that’s actually quite nice. In a way, isn’t this another continuation of my career in the entertainment industry?”
Damian Lau described the past few years as the most relaxed and happiest stage of his life. Lau also encouraged people to reconsider how they approach life’s inevitable challenges “whether illness, aging or even death.” He believes maintaining a positive outlook can help people discover new meaning during difficult times. Beyond addressing his health, the actor remains committed to meaningful projects. He is working on adapting the musical Matteo Ricci for performances at schools and two new books. He said, “I have acted for decades, and those dramas are my works. This stage of my life is also my work.” He hopes that people will recognize not only the man onscreen in the past, but also who he is today.
