Veteran Chinese actor You Benchang died in Beijing on September 24, 2026 due to illness. He was 93. Known for his long career in theater and television, You remained active well into his later years.
Born in 1933, You Benchang witnessed and lived through a remarkable period of Chinese history, building an artistic career that spanned more than seven decades. Despite his passion for acting, he spent years in small roles, never giving up due to the mantra that “there are no small roles.” He eventually ushered in his first leading role as the “Crazy Monk” Ji Gong at age 52, which made him a household name in 1985. His performance also earned him the Best Actor award.
Nearly four decades later, You Benchang captured the attention of a new generation with his role in Wong Kar-wai’s 2023 drama Blossoms Shanghai. His portrayal of Uncle Ye was widely praised for its subtlety and depth, introducing the veteran actor who was already 90 years old at the time to many younger viewers. You Benchang had appeared energetic during the 40th anniversary reunion event for the cast of Ji Gong last year though he had candidly revealed suffering from a serious illness prior. His passing marks the loss of one of China’s most enduring stage and screen performers.
