Ashes of Love Vertical Drama Leaves Fans Missing the Original

A vertical drama version of Ashes of Love has premiered, putting a twist to the angst-filled xianxia romance. In this new adaptation, the heroine and her rival are transported into the world of Ashes of Love, changing the tone of the story into a sweet romantic comedy. The new version comes from the same production company as the original, making extensive use of the popular OSTs. Liao Jinfeng, who played Puchi Jun also makes a guest appearance.

However, like many reimaginings of beloved classics, the new version has been accused of cashing in on viewers’ nostalgia, especially being a vertical drama with lower budget. Its cast starring Wang Yunyun, Zhang Tingrui, and Lan Bo also faced criticism for their acting. The 2018 drama version, starring Yang Zi, Deng Lun, and Luo Yunxi, was a massive hit when it aired. Needless to say, the original series has surged back onto trending charts thanks to the remake.

The new Ashes of Love follows a modern young woman named Lin Xiangmi, a devoted fan of Ashes of Love who feels especially sympathetic toward the character Runyu. One day, she and her longtime rival Jiang Xu accidentally fall into the water and are transported into the novel’s world. Lin Xiangmi becomes Jin Mi, while Jiang Xu becomes Xu Feng. After meeting the key character Runyu, they try to avoid the original love triangle and ensure that every major character receives a happy ending.
