The family of late Hong Kong superstar Anita Mui is appealing for help locating her missing ashes, nearly three months after the urn disappeared from Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. The appeal was published by the Anita Mui International Fan Club on October 10, what would have been the late singer’s 63rd birthday. As news trended, the theft has been widely condemned as a deeply despicable act with past incidents involving ransom.

The disappearance was discovered on July 18, 2026, when a fan visiting Hoi Wui Tower to pay their respects noticed that the screws on the doorplate of Mui’s niche had come loose. Upon checking, they found that the urn containing her ashes was missing. The fan immediately notified the family, who reported the incident to the police. However, nearly three months later, no suspect has been identified.

In their appeal, Anita Mui’s relatives urged anyone who visited the area around the time to share any relevant information. They also asked drivers who passed through the area in July to review their dashcam footage for potential clues. The incident has compounded the family’s grief following the death of Anita Mui’s mother, Tam Mei-kam, on August 30, 2026. The family’s priority is to have the ashes returned. They have reportedly received no ransom demands.
