Louis Koo Teases Extended Cut and Hidden Third Ending for "Back to the Past"

Back to the Past (尋秦記) has quickly become one of Hong Kong’s most talked-about releases recently. Louis Koo, who serves as both the film’s executive producer and lead actor, appeared on a show to share behind-the-scenes insights. As it turns out, an extended cut of the movie is being considered, explaining that a significant amount of footage was removed from the theatrical version. These deleted scenes reportedly include more character-driven moments, such as family interactions and additional development for supporting characters like Sin Yau. According to the actor, these elements could help address what some viewers feel is missing from the current release. However, the extended edition is far from guaranteed as the release of the longer version depends on box office performance.

As for the ending of Back to the Past, which should put a close to the story that began with A Step into the Past in 2001, Louis Koo disclosed that the movie actually has a third ending, one that goes beyond the two versions already known to fans. He described this unseen conclusion as a “continuation” of the story. The groundwork for it was subtly laid within the film, involving a plot detail where Michael Miu’s character secretly hides a receiver in Hong Siu-lung’s home. This was meant to set up a future scenario.

Despite having been filmed, Louis Koo confirmed that this third ending will not be included even if an extended cut is released. Instead, it may serve a larger purpose down the line. He hinted that the story world of Back to the Past could eventually intersect with other projects, teasing a crossover with other movies like a potential connection to Koo’s sci-fi blockbuster Warriors of Future.
