My Date with a Vampire, which first aired in 1998 and became one of the most beloved classics in Hong Kong television history, has recently returned with its newest adaptation (驅魔龍族馬小玲), set in a parallel universe.
Originally planned for a 2023 theatrical release, the film faced multiple setbacks after filming began in 2022 and ultimately opted for an online streaming premiere two years later on December 11, 2025. The reboot follows Ma Siu Ling and Fong Tin Yau, now played by Karena Ng and Bosco Wong, as they battle a vampire apocalypse, presenting a fresh chapter in the franchise. The film is still written by Chan Sap Sam, who also serves as director. He emphasized that this version exists as an “independent universe,” aiming to extend the classic’s charm through new actors and storylines.
However, the release drew significant backlash, particularly toward lead actress Karena Ng, with many viewers feeling she failed to do justice to the iconic role. At the same time, it sparked a wave of collective nostalgia for Joey Meng’s portrayal of the original Ma Siu Ling. The web movie was widely criticized as a cash grab that exploited the franchise’s nostalgic value. Fans who anticipated a Joey Meng cameo were disappointed when she appeared for only about two seconds, shown merely in a close-up of her eyes.
The movie itself also drew flak for “ruining childhood memories,” with complaints ranging from a lack of story depth and weak character development to poor acting and visual effects described to be “like a cheap zombie movie.” Given how iconic the original franchise was, it seems there may simply be no way to top it.
