Hong Kong actress Alice Chan Wai, now 51, first rose to fame as the Miss Asia 1996 beauty queen. However, her path in the entertainment industry wasn’t always smooth. During the difficult years at ATV, she shared that she often hid her struggles from her family, even when she left showbiz in 2008 for four years and got married. Around that time, her late mother was also battling liver cancer and passed in 2011. “My mom saw how I got along with my then husband,” she recalled. “I remember she once told me, ‘If it’s not right, then separate.’ Hearing that, I suddenly realized how open-minded she was. Because of her words, I finally felt at peace with the divorce.”
After divorcing her Taiwanese businessman ex-husband James Yen in 2012, Alice Chan returned to Hong Kong and joined TVB. Years later, she met her current husband, Dr. Aldous Chan. She said, “Honestly, when I met him, I’d already given up on love… I thought maybe at 47, no one would want me.” But his kindness won her over. Once, when she suffered severe menstrual pain and asked him for doctor’s advise, he personally brought her medicine and porridge. “That’s when I realized he truly cared,” she said with a smile.
Her father passed away in 2022 at age 90, and she remains grateful for her husband’s care. “He even used his lunch break to help treat my dad,” she said. Given that lack of communication was a challenge in her previous marriage, and that her current husband also experienced a prior marriage, she shares that she values communication above all. “We talk about everything,” she shared. “He knows me completely, and I know him. There’s no guessing.” She shares that she hasn’t thought of having kids and that her husband already has kids from his first marriage.
