The Prisoner of Beauty Starring Lareina Song Zu’er and Liu Yuning Makes Surprise Premiere

The Prisoner of Beauty 折腰, the much awaited drama starring Lareina Song Zu’er and Liu Yuning finally got a release date locked and loaded and it looks like tonight’s the night! Indeed the series made a last minute announcement earlier today to confirm its May 13, 2025 release date. With a show that promises both a good story and great production value, fans who were looking forward to this were pretty bummed when the project was put on hold following accusations of tax evasion against the show’s female lead back in 2023. Now that Song Zu’er is finally off the tax bureau’s naughty list, and her projects such as The Demon Hunter’s Romance finally being released, fans are breathing a sigh of relief.

Prior to this, rumours pegged Cheng Yi’s drama The Journey of Legend will be the one to go head-to-head with Xiao Zhan’s Legend of Zang Hai sometime this month. But thanks to second lead Eleanor Lee’s alleged derogatory comments against Chinese Mainlanders, it seems the show has been pushed back to make way for The Prisoner of Beauty instead.

The Prisoner of Beauty Synopsis

Fourteen years ago, a retreat on the battlefield orchestrated by Xiao Qiao’s (Song Zu’er) granddad resulted in the deaths of the Wei family elders, igniting a bitter feud between the Qiao and the Wei clans.  Now, Wei Shao (Liu Yuning) the sole heir of the Wei clan, enters into a marriage contract with Xiao Qiao outwardly for revenge, an alliance she agreed to in the hopes of easing tensions. Initially at odds with each other, the couple slowly bond through shared trials. As old grudges fade, love blooms between the pair.

The Prisoner of Beauty also stars Xuan Lu, Liu Duanduan, Liu Xiaoqing, Viva Ho aka He Hongshan, Li Xueqin, Peter Ho, Wang Chengsi, Wei Zixin, Ao Ziyi and Snow Kong to name a few.
