He Hongshan’s Saliva Allergy Is the Reason She Often Plays Villains, But Not This Time

Viva He Hongshan, known for her role as Consort Mei in Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace, is among the cast of the popular costume drama The Prisoner of Beauty. In the series, the 38-year-old baby-faced actress plays Da Qiao, the twenty-something older sister of the female lead, who falls in love with a servant named Bi Zhi—despite the class differences between them. Furthermore, it’s her character that ultimately causes heroine Xiao Qiao to marry into the Wei family.

What’s drawing even more interest is He Hongshan’s rare kiss scene in the drama. The actress has previously revealed that she suffers from a unique allergy—she’s sensitive to saliva. During the filming of The Glory where she also played a supporting role, she explained that even a small amount of contact with saliva causes her skin to break out in rashes. Because of this condition, she has typically avoided romantic scenes involving kissing and often accepted antagonist roles, which usually don’t require intimacy.

He Hongshan admitted that her condition is limiting for her as an actress, but in The Prisoner of Beauty, she not only has a love interest, played by Zhou Lula, but they also filmed a gentle kissing scene. Some joked online, “Didn’t think we’d see He Hongshan kiss scene in this lifetime!”
