SPOILER ALERT: What Happened in the Finale of A Moment But Forever?
Yikes! A Moment But Forever just aired its finale and safe to say, it wasn’t the ending everything was expecting. AT ALL. Viewers who’ve seen the finale have jokingly said the knife wielded by the show’s screenwriter is so much sharper than the “god’s left hand“. As it happens, nobody got their happy ending, even main protagonists Ji Tanyin and Yuan Zhong though there appeared to be a smidge of hope for a reunion … in the very far future.. after she’s been reborn.
As you might have guessed, even goddesses aren’t exempt from death as Ji Tanyin makes the ultimate sacrifice to save Yuan Zhong, breaking the three promises she made. And so, as the couple spent her last moments sat under the pear tree, Ji Tanyin died in her lover’s arms. Yuan Zhong knew she was leaving him for real this time and that there was nothing he can do to keep her with him. The ending does leave hope for viewers though, as it heavily implies that Ji Tanyin can be reborn and regain her former self as a god. Nonetheless, that leaves Yuan Zhong waiting alone until she returns even if in her words, she’s with him at all times, in his his surroundings in different forms like the butterflies that he sees.

A Similar Sad Fate for Everyone
Meanwhile, even the secondary characters in the story met a similar fate. After spending almost her entire life searching for Tang Hua, visiting various places, meeting all sorts of people and going through different tribulations until she was already old and wrinkled, Zhi Dai she magically gained youth and this time around, Tang Hua also fell for her. The irony of it all was that at the very end, she was old and grey again, refusing to see him as she no longer had much time left to live. The cheeky Meishan Jun on the other hand died in battle on the very first day after he ascended to the heavens. Ironic how he fell on the first day on the job as an immortal, but he fought till the his death (unless they revive him somehow) for the sake of his friends. Apparently, he’s alive in the novel(s) though his story is also sad, a man who’s constantly sacrificing, yet remains unfulfilled due to an unrequited love. It seems the only consolation is seeing A Xiu alive at the end, implying that the five weapon spirits who exhausted their life force to save Yuan Zhong are all alive.
Speaking of the source novel, A Moment but Forever is written by Shi Xi Lang whose other novel adaptation Love of Thousand Years starred Zheng Yecheng and Zhao Lusi. In case you missed it, the actor was back in character as Fu Jiu Yun for a quick crossover as he met his maker Ji Tanyin.
