The Whimsical Return (云归喜事), also known as Tang Dynasty Tour 2, has has been filming finally unveiled its first posters. The cast features Leon Zhang Yunlong, Karlina Zhang Jianing, SEVENTEEN’s Jun (credited as Wen Junhui), and Zhao Zhaoyi. This historical drama promises a unique blend of time travel and heartfelt moments, much like its predecessor.
The story follows Yun Ye (played by Zhang Yunlong), a heroic figure who time-travels and reincarnates as a humble clerk. His journey involves navigating family challenges, chasing his wife Li An Lan (played by Karlina Zhang), caring for his child, and saving the nation.
Fans hoping for a reunion between the original leads from 2018’s Tang Dynasty Tour might be disappointed, as Wang Tianchen does not reprise his role. Instead, Leon Zhang Yunlong takes on dual roles as Yun Ye and Fang Guan Yu. This drama also marks his reunion with Karlina Zhang after seven years, following their collaboration in Xuan-Yuan Sword: Han Cloud.
Perhaps the casting most exciting to his fans is SEVENTEEN member Wen Junhui, better known by his stage name Jun. Making his debut in a historical Chinese drama, he plays Wen Liangchen, the second male lead. Zhao Zhaoyi’s lively energy rounds out the main cast, adding charm to the ensemble.
The original Tang Dynasty Tour followed a modern man who suddenly time-traveled to the Tang Dynasty. Using his present-day knowledge to survive, he became entangled in the era’s political schemes. While the show was praised for its creativity, some fans felt the latter half became too chaotic. It ended with two different conclusions—one “sad” and one “happy.” The male lead who went back to the future manages to return to his family in the past. However, it still ends with a cliffhanger as a hooded figure spies on them. It looks like they definitely planned for a Tang Dynasty Tour 2 and while the wait took years, at least they’re finally filming this.
