
Cheng Yi’s “old” drama “Deep Lurk (深潜),” a spy drama he filmed in 2019 finally premiered! This being a drama that was shelved for five years and was shot just before Cheng Yi landed his breakout role in Love and Redemption, expectation wasn’t high, yet the show which drop without any promos has been doing well. It hit 1.6% in ratings on CCTV-8, putting it first though it is on the afternoon slot on television. iQIYI heat index also hit 6000 on premiere, which has fans saying it’s the show that can “save” the streaming platform.
While Cheng Yi has shot up to fame with his costume dramas in recent years, having an “old drama” do decently is still an achievement for the actor. Many were pleasantly surprised to see seasoned actor Wang Jinsong playing Cheng Yi’s father. Their heartfelt scenes, culminating in the father’s tragic death, showcased Cheng Yi’s acting and he’s got a level-headed love interest with female lead Wen Yeming. played by Ying Er.
Deep Lurk is set during the Anti-Japanese War. The Japanese army activated a long-hidden spy, known as “Black Butler,” to execute a plan aimed at occupying Changsha. Communist underground member Yun Muzhi was killed while investigating Black Butler’s activities. Cheng Yi who plays the son, Yun Hongshen, first unaware of his father’s true mission, pursued the murderer and joined forces with patriotic youth Wen Yeming.

I really like Wang JinSong. He is a skilled actor. I really hope they pay all these veteran actors who are really so much better at their craft than all those pretty-face idol actors, well.
