There are so many dramas being discussed lately, especially following the recent Tencent Conference, one such drama is the fantasy romance Love Beyond the Grave (慕胥辞), starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Arthur Chen Feiyu. The show has ignited heated discussions even before its announcement, from objections about pairing Dilraba with Arthur following his controversy, to criticism from fans over what was perceived as lackluster styling and costumes even as the show is still airing. An “infamous” clip even surfaced, showing a makeup artist seemingly ignoring Dilraba’s concern about heavy makeup, leading her fans to protest her treatment in the drama. However, recent “leaked” photos from set seem to signal that the production team has made improvements.
Love Beyond the Grave just dropped the first stills of the main cast—Dilraba, Arthur Chen, Miles Wei, and Zhang Li. It brings vivid colors, especially Dilraba’s greenish-blue costume while having an even larger headpiece. The previous teasers where she was in all-black drew her backlash and while it seems to be in a similar vein, the goth theme and stylistic choices were actually quite unique compared to what’s typically seen in traditional fantasy dramas.
In Love Beyond the Grave, Dilraba portrays He Simu, a 400-year-old ghost king, while Arthur Chen takes on the role of Duan Xu, a young general. The casting feels fitting for their age gap, which is hundred of years apart while 32-year-old Dilraba is eight years older than Arthur. The plot follows He Simu’s encounter with Duan Xu as she seeks sustenance, only to discover he carries a relic from her past. As their relationship unfolds, He Simu learns about Duan Xu’s dark history, while he begins to see her resilience and loneliness.
