Another Xiangsheng Cross-Talk Performer Lands First Leading Role

Xiangsheng, also known as “cross-talk,” a traditional Chinese comedic performing art characterized by witty dialogue, wordplay, and humorous banter has become popular again over the years. Many xiangsheng performers even transitioned into the Chinese entertainment industry. Aside from participating in the long-running stand-up comedy Rock & Roast (脱口秀大会), many branched out to hosting, appearing in variety shows, reality programs as well as acting.

Xu Zhisheng, a well-known and active figure in xiangsheng, has now landed his first leading role in the historical comedy series Hidden Master (侠客行不通). He plays Gou Lingfeng, a young man born with an intimidating appearance but a kind heart. After accidentally learning martial arts from a “demonic sect,” he ventures into the jianghu (martial arts world) and delves into solving mysterious cases.

Though this is not Xu Zhisheng’s first drama appearance (he even made a cameo in Joy of Life 2), it marks his first time as the main protagonist, with Yu Menglong also joining the cast as a special star. The 29-year-ole actor isn’t the only xiangsheng performer to venture into acting. Others like Li Xueqin and Qin Xiaoxian prior to his scandal have also made their mark in Chinese showbiz, but perhaps the most notable is Guo Qilin, son of xiangsheng master Guo Degang who played a significant role in revitalizing the art form, which had been declining in popularity by the 1990s. Guo Qilin recently headlined the drama Escape from the Triangular Slopes, finding much success on screen.
