Taiwanese actress Ariel Lin raised quite a few eyebrows when she claimed she’s a Chengdu native whilst on the Chinese dating reality show Heart Signal 7. As a regular guest on the show’s 7th season, the 41-year-old star was pretty thrilled when she learned a guest was from Chengdu. I guess she couldn’t contain herself when she excitedly blurted “I’m a Chengdu person”. She quickly clarified that her granddad is from Chengdu.

Taiwanese Netizens meanwhile weren’t too thrilled to hear the actress say she’s a Chengdu person, which is a city in Sichuan, China. “Her grandfather is from Chengdu so she’s a Chengdu native now?” demanded one Netizen.  Another disappointed commenter said they didn’t expect Ariel Lin to “fall into the trap too”. After her “Chengdu” comment came out, someone cheekily updated her Wikipedia details from Taiwan’s Yilan County to say Chengdu as her hometown instead. Suddenly, the woman dubbed as the “Goddess With Zero Negative Reviews” is now the subject of criticism.

In the past, Ariel has also identified with her Sichuanese roots. In 2013 whilst promoting the drama Prince of Lan Ling ,she shared a sentimental post about feeling right at home in her grandad’s hometown. “Two years after my grandfather passed, I finally returned to his hometown. As the plane slowly descended, I saw this land and suddenly felt a strong sense of belonging. If my grandfather hadn’t come to Taiwan, didn’t make the choice to be with my grandma, my dad won’t exist and he wouldn’t meet my mum. I would never be born. What a wonderful fate” she shared.
