Detective Chinatown’s director Chen Sicheng and Liu Haoran are back with yet another exciting project! The duo’s suspense thriller movie Decoded set for a release date on August 3, 2024 will feature 26-year-old Liu Haoran as you’ve never seen before.
A Math Genius
Gone is the sunny and optimistic Qin Feng from Detective Chinatown. Instead, he will be replaced by a mysterious decoder named Rong Jinzhen, a mathematical genius who was recruited because of his extraordinary talent and code breaking skills. It’s been eight years since Decoded, a Chinese spy series based on the same novel that starred Cheney Chen as the autistic math prodigy aired, so it seems a long enough time for viewers to have another version.
Speaking of transformations, in order to turn himself into Rong Jingzhen, Liu Haoran not only lost 20lbs, it’s reported he even plucked his eyebrows to physically turn into his on-screen persona. A receding hairline and a pair of glasses added the finishing touch. If done right, his role playing Rong Jinzhen has the potential to become his breakthrough role that would surely put him on every producer’s map.
Decoded Synopsis and Cast
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Mao Dun Literature Awardee Mai Jia, Decoded is a suspense thriller set in the early 60s featuring a group of codebreakers entrusted to decipher mysterious telegrams . Whereas technology would no doubt come in pretty handy these days, in the good ol’ days, solving complex puzzles inevitably requires a whole lot of brainpower and math skills.

As for its cast, you’ll notice there’re quite a number of stars on the roster with Hollywood star John Cusack playing Liu Haoran’s mentor and veteran actor Chen Daoming who recruited him into the organisation, on board. Meanwhile, Daniel Wu is also on the lineup, playing Rong Jinzhen’s adoptive father Xiao Lili. The film also features Yu Feihong, Ren Luyao, Chen Yuxi and Wang Yutian on the cast.
