Ella Chen had to change the caption on one of her Weibo posts after earning the ire of some netizens for her comment about being girly.

The 41-year-old singer who’s always had a tomboyish image uploaded a series of pics taken from her performance in Ride The Wind Season 4, a Chinese survival show where contestants are made up of established celebrities. The S.H.E member was looking really lovely in a tube dress for their group performance to the viral Vietnamese pop song Ding Ding Dang Dang. She wrote in the caption, “Been 22 years since forming a group, but have never been so female (girly)…”

The singer-actress probably did not mean any harm but some netizens were quick to criticize, interpreting what she said as gender stereotyping women into a certain look. Some went as far as saying that she’s not pro-women and making it sound as if being too girly is something negative. Because of the attention the post was getting, Ella Chen changed her caption from “have never been so female (girly)” to “have never been so sweet.”

Nonetheless, her comment and decision to change it has gotten her trending with many arguing for or against it. Meanwhile, her fans were quick to throw compliments at the Taiwanese performer saying that the style looks good on her, and not to mind people who are overly sensitive. Ella first debuted in 2001 as part of the Taiwanese girl group S.H.E. She married her Malaysian husband Alvin Lai in 2012 and their son, Daniel aka Jin Bao, is now six years old.
