According to reports by China’s People’s Daily, singer-actor Kris Wu Yifan who holds Canadian citizenship has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and deportation.
On November 25, Beijing Chaoyang People’s Court disclosed the details on defendant Wu Yifan’s case. He has been sentenced to eleven years and six months in prison for the crime of rape as well as subsequent deportation. He has also been sentenced to one year and ten months in prison for the crime of “group licentiousness”. As combined punishment for the crimes, he has to serve a 13-year-sentence before being deported.
It was found through the trial that from November to December 2020, the defendant, Wu Yifan, took advantage of three drunken women who did not know how to resist or could not resist and forced them to have sex in his residence. On July 1, 2018, Wu Yifan together with two other women engaged in promiscuous activities at his residence after drinking. Chaoyang People’s Court held that Wu Yifan’s actions constitute the crimes of rape and “group licentiousness” and should be punished according to law.
Kris Wu who turned 32 on November 6 shot up to fame as part of the South Korean boy group EXO before focusing on a career in China. Last year, a woman named Du Meizhu launched a string of accusations against Kris Wu that exploded into a huge scandal when more alleged victims came forward. He was detained on July 31, 2021 and formally arrested on August 16, 2021.
Update: On November 25, Chinese media also reported that Wu Yifan has evaded taxes. China’s tax bureau aims to recover the unpaid taxes as well as late charges and fines amounting to 600 million yuan (approx 84 million USD).
