“Blossoms Shanghai” Sees Hu Ge and Tang Yan Reunion For Wong Kar-Wai’s TV Debut

Hu Ge and Tiffany Tang Yan in Blossoms Shanghai

Upcoming drama Blossoms Shanghai 繁花 by acclaimed director Wong Kar-Wai sees Chinese Paladin 3 costars Hu Ge and Tiffany Tang Yan reuniting once again for their fourth project together.

When it was announced last year that author Jin Yucheng’s award-winning “Blossoms” novel was getting a TV adaptation to be directed by none other than Wong Kar Wai, excitement levels were pretty high most especially when it was also confirmed that Nirvana in Fire actor Hu Ge was also on board to play Bao Zong. Now that it’s widely known that the award-winning actress Ma Yili along with Tiffany Tang Yan and Xin Zhilei have also signed on to play the women in A Bao’s life, expectations are no doubt also sky-high.

For Hu Ge and Tang Yan in particular, the series marks their fourth collaboration since Xuan-Yuan Sword: Scar of Sky 轩辕剑之天之痕 released almost 9 years ago in 2012. Aside from this, the pair also worked together on Unbeatable 无懈可击之高手如林 (2011) and Chinese Paladin 3 仙剑奇侠传三 (2009).

Blossoms Shanghai also marks the famed director’s first foray into television from the big screens with Wong Kar-Wai’s very own hometown of 90’s Shanghai serving as its backdrop. Like his other works, the teaser above is classic Wong Kar-Wai with its sepia tones evoking a sense of nostalgia. The drama covers the life of Hu Ge’s character Mr. Bao in several stages – from his humble beginnings as a man with a troubled past to his subsequent rise to the top as a self-made millionaire and the different women in his life helping him to get there. Together with A Bao’s growth, we also see how massive economic growth transformed the city into the vibrant and glittering metropolis it is today.
