After languishing for three years in the cupboard where unaired dramas lie in wait, Wang Yibo and Zhang Yijie’s My Strange Friend (lit) 我的奇怪朋友 finally makes it out for an August 19 premiere. Filmed in 2017 and wrapped in 2018 due to a delay in between, the webdrama revolves around a group of youths imbued with super powers … and by super powers I don’t mean the type you normally see in xianxia. Think along the lines of X-men mutants with their superpowers to read minds, predict danger, generate electricity, telekinesis and invisibility. As with any story where “normal” folks suddenly discover their mutant abilities, our band of teens struggle to control them.
A look at the trailer shows some hilarious moments involving x-ray vision and a girl as well as when Wang Yibo finds out he may have lost his superpowers at an inopportune time when he’s completely surrounded by goons. Of course, goons are necessary because a baddie has to be covetous of the group’s new found abilities!

The 24 episode long series is an example of a much younger Wang Yibo’s work as he was just 19 then. Certainly it’s a ways before he hit the jackpot and shot to global popularity in last year’s The Untamed. Meanwhile his fresh faced co-star Zhang Yijie was a bit of a noob back then too with stints in supporting roles under his belt. He has since moved on to leading roles now and if you’ve watched the 2019 version of The Prince of Tennis also on Netflix, then his face should be familiar to you since he co-stars as Zhuo Zhi. Actresses Wang Mengli and Zhang Nan make up the remaining members of the drama’s “fantastic four”.
