Seeing as it’s almost time for the world’s best tennis players to battle it out once more in the French Open later this month, it’s quite apt to be bringing your attention to a new tennis themed drama, The Prince of Tennis 网球少年 / 奋斗吧少年. Starring actor Peng Yuchang as the main character, the drama tells the story of talented tennis prodigy Long Ma and his teammates as they “swing it out” to discover the true essence of the sport.

Long Ma, our tennis prodigy, has been living with his parents in the US since he was a child. He had inherited his father’s prowess in tennis but is unhappy to be living under his father’s shadow. In order to prove himself, he devotes himself to tennis but ends up losing sight of the passion and the fun of playing the game.

Long Ma joins his high school’s tennis team after returning to China, and in the process of vying for the top spot in the national league realises the importance of teamwork, the achievement of a new sense of self, and rediscovers the joy of the game.

The series is called The Prince of Tennis but maybe they should reword it to “Princes” of Tennis instead what with all the eye candy playing Long Ma’s team mates and tennis rivals in the series. Made up of young up and comers, I don’t think you’ll have an easy time determining your favourite player to root for with a cast consisting of Peng Yuchang, Dong Dali, Xie Binbin, Zhang Yijie, Zhu Zhiling, Xu Ke, Sean Wu Xudong, Li He and Fan Linfeng. *lol* To counterbalance all that testosterone, actresses Song Yi Ren (she’s definitely on a roll with the lot of new dramas she’s been filming), Xu Hao and Liu Yongxi will be providing the feminine points of view in the series.

Anyway, even if you’re not a fan of tennis, do give this new series a go once it airs, you never know, this drama might just spark some joy and a new obsession with the sport just like we all did with ice hockey after watching Disney’s The Mighty Ducks series or football with Bend It Like Beckham! So yep, please give the series some love.
Release Date: July 22, 2019 Hunan TV, Tencent, Mango TV (two episodes every Monday to Wednesday at 10pm)

So far so good. Those who love Price of Tennis in the Japanese anime during high school can give this Cdrama a try because it follows the story quite closely.
Only thing is that Ryoma Ichizen is called Lu Xia in the Cdrama. It should be Long-ma, where even the dubbed old Japanese anime called him Long-ma. ????? :□

I'd give this drama a 5 star! I love all the characters and no dull scene! If you haven't watched the anime then better give it a go. 🙂

Any romance in this?

There is a little romance between some characters but the show seems to focus on the tennis aspect rather than love.

is there not a season 2 yet because of the pandemic?

Most likely there will be no season 2. I have watched quite a few Chinese dramas and most of them seem to end on just a season 1. Sorry if this disappointed you.
