If you’ve seen the movie Go Away, Mr. Tumor 滚蛋吧！肿瘤君, cried buckets of tears after watching it and STILL WANT MORE, then get ready because filming has begun for a drama based on the movie that’s adapted from Xiong Dun’s manhua of the same name.
The manhua-turned-movie-turned-drama is actually based on the life of the author and was penned by her after she got diagnosed with cancer. No wonder the story hits home for a lot of people.
Living Toward the Sun 向阳而生 (if it will completely follow the movie) tells the story of the happy-go-lucky heroine – a twenty-eight-year-old career woman who has great dreams in life before she turns 29, but, just like any melodrama where the protagonist is suddenly faced with a life and death situation, not only does she lose her job, she also finds out that her boyfriend – is cheating on her. And just when she thought the worst was over, she gets diagnosed with cancer. (Did I mention this all happened around her birthday? Yup.)
Instead of sulking over her hapless life, she decides to embark on a journey to live her life to the fullest, creating beautiful memories with the people she loves and the people she meets along the way. Unfortunately, author Xiong Dun died after battling cancer in the end.
If she had written the manhua in hopes of reminding herself and readers all over the world of how important life is, then she did a darn good job. I felt that throughout the film and cried buckets all throughout.
Jiang Xin who is best known for her roles in the dramas Ode to Joy and The Legend of Zhen Huan will be playing the endearing heroine. Jiang Xin’s played the leading lady in so many dramas yet it feels like she has yet to get her biggest break. I hope that this upcoming drama and her portrayal of it will be her ticket to it.
Alongside her is an actor who needs no further introduction for fans of Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and its upcoming spinoff Three Lives Three Worlds The Pillow Book. Vengo Gao plays Doctor Lin, the charming medical specialist who will help her through her journey.
Joining them in the cast are Dan Lin, Gao Xuyang, Fu Tianjiao, Wang Lei, Li Jin, Shi Tianshuo, Guo Zhenjia, Zhang Ruofeng, Kong Jinjing and Qi Sijun.
Filming began on Oct 18th, Friday, in Hangzhou.
