Zhao Ge 朝歌 is a 50-episode Chinese historical drama headlined by Zhang Zhe Han (Legend of Banshu), Bao Jian Feng, Wu Jin Yan, Li Yi Tong (Legend of Condor Heroes) and Merxat (Demon Girl). It is a Yu Zheng production, which you may have guessed from the cast and even though it can get repetitive watching the same people again, I have to admit, Zhang Zhe Han as the lead is a a pretty good choice.
The story is set towards the end of the Shang Dynasty, a period in time often revisited in pop culture to tell the story of an incompetent king who led an entire nation to its downfall. Ji Fa is a man who enlists the help of powerful people to achieve his vision of a better world.
After reading the plot and finding it all too familiar, I realize that this is yet another drama inspired by the Investiture of the Gods though it remains to be seen just how much of it will be fantasy. After all, this one seems determined to focus on the historical elements.
Update: Fast forward to 2021 and the show, which I’ve been waiting for still hasn’t aired! I’m sad to be the bearer of bad news, but this might actually be shelved for good what with Zhang Zhe Han’s unfortunately controversy that has seen him, his works and his social media blacklisted in China.
