Chinese reality show Wonderland kicked off its newest season with Moka Fang Yuan, best known for being the wife of Hong Kong superstar Aaron Kwok, joining the cast. However, her unexpected foray into variety has gotten her trending with accusations that she’s “self-centered” and has “low EQ.” Moka Fang was criticized after insisting on staying in a single room even if her decision meant that nine male guests had to share just one bathroom.
What Happened?
In the show, the male participants initially offered their single room to the ladies because they were willing to share a common room themselves. However, they later realized that the single room was actually located inside the men’s dormitory area. Xu Zhisheng pointed out that it might be inconvenient for Moka, since she would need to walk through the boys’ sleeping area to reach her room. They also realized there was another issue: the men’s dorm only had two bathrooms, and one of them was inside the single room.
Her Explanation Triggers Greater Backlash
Although Xu Zhisheng raised these concerns, Fang Yuan insisted on staying in the room, explaining that she sleeps late and did not want to disturb others. As a result, the nine male guests were left with only one shared public bathroom. The awkward moment where Xu Zhisheng had repeatedly tried but failed to politely convince Moka Fang has gone viral. He eventually proposed a compromise, trying the setup for one day to see if it’s doable. When interviewed about it, Fang Yuan maintained her stance about how the room was initially offered and that she was not “taking” it by force.
With the negative reception, she also took to social media with a response, saying that “kindness does not require wronging yourself” and that “being considerate does not mean forcing yourself to endure discomfort.” She argued that a woman’s sense of self-worth and deservingness should not rely on constantly giving way to others, and it’s something she teachers her daughters. However, she deleted the post within two hours as it triggered even greater backlash online.
Some netizens supported her, while others blamed the production team for poor planning, such as the inadequate bathroom arrangement and the awkward dorm layout. However, majority of criticism fell on Moka Fang. Her absence from the recent Wonderland presscon also drew attention, due to the timing coinciding with recent backlash. Director Xie Dikui explained Moka Fang had taken temporary leave because of urgent family matters. Others emphasized that family emergencies are legitimate reasons for absence, and warned that malicious speculation could cause harm.
