Where the Mask Ends: Tian Xiwei Plays Dual Roles as a Low-Born and an Heiress

Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗), based on a novel by Xiao Jia Ren, is seeing new updates as it gears for premiere. It looks to be another costume drama focused on family politics and power struggles within a wealthy household, and it’s coming on the heels of the hit drama Against the Current, expected to take the same time slot on state-run CCTV-8. This is Tian Xiwei’s next historical drama after the success of Pursuit of Jade and she’s featured as the star of the show. The drama’s costumes, makeup, and styling draw heavily on Han Dynasty aesthetics with the female lead alone having more than 60 different looks.

In Where the Mask Ends, Tian Xiwei plays a dual role, portraying both the low-born Ah Chou and the cruel noblewoman Wei Rao. Due to their resemblance, Ah Chou substitutes for Wei Rao in an arranged marriage to the sickly Lu Zhuo where she faces new challenges and takes the opportunity to change her fate. Yan An, a former member of Pentagon has stepped into leading-man status after his supporting role in Fangs of Fortune. The two initially scheme against each other, but eventually join forces. Like most stories, the household struggles expand into court politics involving the country.

The cast also includes Liu Xiaobei, Pan Junya, Dai Gaozheng, Yin Wenxuan, Nikita Mao Linlin, Tien Niu and Chen Zihan. While not yet announced, the rumored premiere date is October 16, 2026 on Youku.
