Dancing with the Tide: Tan Jianci and Lu Yuxiao

Dancing with the Tide (何不同舟渡) led by Tan Jianci and Lu Yuxiao recently kicked off filming with a boot ceremony, a full cast reveal, and enough spectacle to trend on the hot search. With this being a S+ production, it’s among the anticipated dramas positioned to become a massive hit. Based on the popular novel Why Not Sail Together?, it tells the story of a traitor general who’s actually a spy and a petty thief clawing her way through a brutal world.

Tan Jianci Reflects on the Past 10 Years

Given Tan Jianci’s popularity as a singer-actor, the opening ceremony at Hengdian drew a crowd of over 10,000 people with 3,200 drones lighting up the sky, etc. But the most talked-about moment came from the 35-year-old actor himself. During the ceremony, Tan Jianci reflected that it was 2016 when he first set foot on Hengdian with his dream to pursue acting as he was a singer and member of the Mando-pop group M.I.C. He said he could not have imagined that he would witness such a booting ceremony 10 years later. Tan Jianci moved to tears subsequently trended on the hot search.

Politics, Espionage and Romance

Set against the Southern Song dynasty, Dancing with the Tide blends court politics with espionage. The main characters begin as adversaries shaped by suspicion and survival, but gradually become allies bound by trust that is tested again and again. As the title goes, “In times of peril, may we cross the tide together.” In the novel, one stolen purse ties her fate to a man branded a traitor. She runs, he chases, and she finds herself becoming his “sister-in-law.”

The drama is directed by Yang Wenjun (Royal Nirvana), known for weaving political narratives and written by Huang Fen (Faithful).
