Chinese singer-actor Tan Jianci, 35 years old, has been trending on Weibo’s hot search over dating rumors with newcomer actress Liu Yinuo, born in 2006 and a second-year student at Beijing Film Academy. It sparked controversy because Tan Jianci, born in 1990, is 16 years older than Liu Yinuo, who is 19 years old.
The rumors started over photos Liu Yinuo posted on social media, which appeared to show a closet seemingly containing items Tan Jianci owns, such as a custom-made rug printed with the image of his pet dog as well as shirts. She also posted Cartier jewelry she received with the caption, “If you knew who gave this to me, you’d think I’m really lucky.”

On January 7, Tan Jianci shut down rumors that he has a girlfriend when he posted a video of himself with his two dogs Tan Xiaodai and Tan Liqiu, captioned: “PROOF: three single dogs.” His studio shared the same and wrote: “No matter how noisy the outside world is, just PROOF it.” The move not only cleverly promoted his song Proof but was also interpreted as him denying the rumors, suggesting that he’s indeed single.
Meanwhile, Liu Yinuo posted that “(we) were together before and have already broken up.” She explained the reason for her recent posts, “My original intention was just to record things, and also because I didn’t want to be treated as the same kind of identity as the girls who were exposed before (every girl deserves to be loved and respected). I didn’t expect it to escalate to this extent. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, hurt, and distress caused to everyone.” Earlier this week, Tan Jianci was among those named by influencer Si Xiaodi who claims to have slept with many male celebs in Chinese showbiz.
Fans question the authenticity of the so-called “evidences” like the custom-made rug having cheap imitations easily bought online. With no photos together, they challenge the lack of concrete proof, leading to speculation that their idol’s being maliciously targeted. Nevertheless, the statements drew more controversy as Tan Jianci’s side simply denied being in a relationship while Liu Yinuo claimed they were indeed together before. The hashtag about their breakup trended subsequently.

I was annoyed when I saw the comment about 19 being a child. Neither 19 (or 20 in this case) or 18 is the same as 17. At what age do you think a woman is allowed to be considered an adult? People complain about the Infantilization of women, and yet they want them to be treated as children who don’t know better and can’t take responsibility for their own choices and actions, even when they are legally recognized as adults. If you are trusted to drink, and not drive, at 18, then you can certainly choose to date other adults. If you are given a gun and trained to kill people, and forced to join the military at 18, you can certainly chose to date other adults.
