Malaysian singer Wee Meng Chee, mononymously known as Namewee, became entangled in the case surrounding the death of Iris Hsieh, a Taiwanese influencer known for her OnlyFans content and strong social media following. The 31-year-old Hsieh was found dead on October 22 in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bathtub. Police confirmed that Namewee tested positive for illegal substances and was later charged with drug possession and drug use. He claimed that when he called for medical help, the ambulance took nearly an hour to arrive, an assertion that Malaysian authorities later contested. This week, authorities have since reclassified the investigation as a murder case, naming Namewee as a key person of interest.
On November 4, police issued a nationwide warrant after failing to locate the singer for over six hours. However, on November 5, Namewee resurfaced on social media, denying any attempt to escape. In his post, the 42-year-old artist stated, “I will not run. The 7 times I was under arrest, I always voluntarily surrendered and never tried to escape.” He confirmed his arrival at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters and said he would fully cooperate with officers “to give society and the victim’s family an explanation.”
Accompanied by friends and his lawyer, Namewee turned himself in around 1 a.m. local time. Authorities later confirmed a six-day detention order to facilitate questioning.
The case has fueled much speculation online. A close friend of the victim, accused Namewee of luring Hsieh to Malaysia under false pretenses, saying Hsieh had believed she was traveling for a music video shoot that did not actually exist. As investigations continue, Malaysian authorities are exploring all angles, including potential foul play.
