Stanley Fung Dies at 81 in Taiwan After Health Struggles, Days After Mourning Benz Hui

Hong Kong actor and director Stanley Fung Sui-fan (馮淬帆) has passed away in Taiwan on October 31, 2025, at the age of 81. In his later years, Fung battled long-term health issues. He was hospitalized several times in 2025 due to respiratory problems and relied on an oxygen machine after suffering from pneumonia earlier that year. Just three days before his passing, he mourned his friend Benz Hui on social media, writing, “but I’m older than you, and I’m sick and frail, breathing with difficulty… Ah, my dear brother, wait for me on the other side. Your foolish older brother will join you soon!” The remark, which once seemed like a sorrowful goodbye, now feels hauntingly prophetic.

Stanley Fung began his career in 1968 as a TVB drama male lead. He went on to become a comedy legend, having risen to fame in the 1980s as part of Hong Kong’s action comedy Five Lucky Stars film series, where he played the sharp-tongued “Rawhide / Rhino Skin.” Known for his humor, he also starred in classics like The Romancing Star, and many more. Later in life, he became openly critical of the “low-quality” of recent comedies and had an open feud with filmmaker Wong Jing. Stanley Fung never married and had no children. After financial losses from investments, he settled down in Taiwan.

Fans mourned the loss of yet another star, as his passing signaled the fading of Hong Kong’s golden age of cinema.
