Republic-era drama The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋) has officially begun filming on October 31, 2025, with a booting ceremony held in Hengdian, Zhejiang. The production will span approximately 150 days, shooting across Hengdian, Shanghai, and Tianjin, and is expected to wrap in March 2026.
The series stars Ryan Cheng Lei as Yu Changxuan, a seemingly frivolous but cunning young warlord whose sharp gaze and slicked-back hair in a classic suit already have fans swooning. Xu Ruohan plays Ye Pingjun, a poor but determined student whose cheongsam look captures the fragile grace of a woman. Guo Yuxin joins as Tao Ziyi, a wealthy heiress whose love-driven downfall turns her to darkness. The 26-year-old actress, known for her short drama work, is thrilled to finally land a second lead role in a mainstream drama. Similarly, Cheng Lei, who also rose from short drama productions to leading man status, finally top bills his own series.
The Hunan TV and Mango TV drama follows Ye Pingjun as she becomes entangled in an assassination plot to save her mother. What begins as a “ten-day investigation” wager with the warlord Yu Changxuan spirals into a storm of obsession, captivity, and love. Their relationship though twisted eventually leading the pair to join hands in the revolutionary cause. Fans of the original novel worry that the adaptation might tone down its darker, more intense elements.
Adapted from the web novel by Ling Xi (灵希), The Lament of Autumn is described as a tragic romance born amid chaos, “a domineering kind of possession, a lifelong obsession.” The couple posters already hint at a charged, emotional dynamic: Yu Changxuan’s hand gripping Ye Pingjun’s wrist, his hand grabbing at her neck. With that level of tension, viewers can probably expect plenty of heartache.
