South Korean actress Hwang Jung Eum, known for hit dramas such as “She Was Pretty” and “Kill Me Heal Me,” enjoyed a long-standing reputation as one of Korea’s beloved leading ladies until news of her embezzlement case shocked the public, marking an unexpected turn in her career. On September 25, the 40-year-old actress was handed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for four years, after admitting to embezzling about 4.2 billion won (approximately USD 3 million) from her own entertainment company. The verdict was delivered by the Jeju District Court.
According to court findings, Hwang Jung Eum diverted the money in 2022 from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, a company she fully owns. A large portion reportedly went into cryptocurrency investments, while the rest covered property taxes, local taxes, and credit card bills. The court noted that the misappropriated sum was significant and used for speculative investments and luxury purchases. However, because the company was solely hers and no third parties suffered direct losses, the judge opted for leniency.
The actress repaid the full amount in two installments earlier this year, on May 30 and June 5, and had no prior criminal record. These factors, combined with her admission of guilt, convinced the court to suspend the sentence rather than send her to prison.
Hwang Jung Eum appeared visibly emotional in court, tearing up as the decision was read. Leaving the courtroom, she bowed to reporters and said, “I’m truly sorry for causing concern. I’ve never even been to a police station before—hearing the verdict made me cry.” Her attorney stated that they respect the court’s judgment.
