On the morning of August 4, 2025, South Korean actor Song Young Kyu was found unconscious inside a parked car near a townhouse in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. He was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead shortly after. He was 55 years old. The cause of death is under investigation, though no foul play is suspected.
Song Young Kyu’s sudden death comes just weeks after his DUI scandal. On June 19, he was caught driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol level of 0.08%—enough to warrant a license revocation in Korea. After public backlash, he issued a public apology, admitting he had mixed medication with alcohol, but accepted full responsibility: “One poor decision destroyed everything.”
The consequences professionally were severe as he lost projects as a result. Privately, Song Young Kyu was grappling with long-standing financial issues. Reportedly separated from his wife, he lived alone while supporting two daughters—one studying in the U.S., the other pursuing musical theater. Despite personal struggles, The actor’s legacy as a “golden supporting actor” spans more than 30 years. He was beloved for roles like the warm-hearted uncle in Reply 1988 and “Chief Choi” in Extreme Job.
Song Young Kyu’s funeral will be held on August 6. He is survived by his wife and their two daughters.
