On July 31, Beijing’s Chaoyang District Court delivered its final ruling in the court case against actor Li Mingde for damaging private property while intoxicated. He was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay civil compensation of 200,000 yuan (approx. USD 27,500). The ruling has now come into legal effect.
What Happened?
The incident occurred on the night of January 27, 2025. After drinking, Li Mingde kicked and smashed a parked Mercedes-Benz in the Chaoyang district. The vehicle’s owner, who uses the online handle Director Yang Yang (Weibo: 编导杨洋), suffered multiple damages to the car’s door, side mirror, and emblem.
Initially, Li Mingde cooperated with police and signed a mediation agreement at the station, even adding Yang on WeChat and promising to cover the estimated 90,000 yuan repair costs. However, once Yang sent over the repair bill the next day, the actor reportedly blocked him and refused to pay.
Professional and Legal Repercussions
Based on surveillance footage and witness reports, authorities determined Li Mingde had committed the crime of “intentional property damage.” His post-incident behavior—refusing to honor the agreement and blocking the victim—contributed to the court’s decision not to grant a suspended sentence.
Although Yang was also fined for illegal parking, the court clarified this did not lessen Li Mingde’s criminal responsibility. Legal costs and damages raised the final compensation amount to 200,000 yuan.
Professionally, the consequences were immediate ever since the actor’s controversies. Li Mingde’s role in the upcoming drama Legend of the Female General has already been digitally replaced using AI. And it appears a comeback is highly unlikely. Meanwhile, Li Mingde also faces a separate defamation lawsuit due to his accusations against fellow actor Ma Tianyu.
