Huang Xiaoming returns to the Republican genre with Abyss Dweller (潜渊), headed for Chinese primetime television as it is set to premiere on June 9, 2025 on Hunan TV, Mango TV and Tencent.
Plot
Backed by artistic director Mao Weining and director Wang Yiwei, Abyss Dweller, set in 1940s Shanghai, follows amnesiac military intelligence agent Liang Shuo (Huang Xiaoming), who becomes embroiled in a deadly conspiracy while searching for his lost identity. With shifting alliances and murky loyalties, his journey evolves from personal survival to a fight for a higher cause. He transforms into a “three-faced spy”—simultaneously balancing roles within the Nationalist camp, the Japanese forces, and the underground resistance.
At the same time, a darker plan is in motion—a large group of refugees and laborers face certain death once a peace conference concludes. Yet at this pivotal moment, the mission’s key operative to save the prisoners goes missing.
Cast
Huang Xiaoming is a seasoned spy drama actor with roles in The Infiltrator and The Message. Joining him is acclaimed actress Zhang Jianing as fiery heroine Xie Nianzi, along with a supporting cast including Yu Jinwei, Jian Renzi, Ai Xiaoqi, Li Qiang and Yu Yang.
