Nearly a decade after The Mystic Nine first came out, its much awaited sequel is finally in the works! William Chan returns to reprise his role as the leader of the mystic nine clan Zhang Qishan. Unlike William however, it looks like two of his previous co-stars – Lay Zhang Yixing and Zhao Liying will not be returning for The Mystic Nine 2 九门.
Seeing that the plot for the sequel supposedly focuses on Wu Laogou’s origin story –the Wu Laogou whose notebook served as a critical guide to tomb robbing for his grandson, Wu Xie, it only makes sense that we have ourselves a couple of new characters in the cast. Chen Yao plays the female lead Huo Xiangu, Huo Xiuxiu’s grandma and the only woman in the Mystic Nine who allied herself with Wu Laogou, one on the most powerful members in the group. Joseph Zeng Shunxi has been cast to portray Wu Laogou. Wu Xie himself said that Huo Xiangu and his granddad “had history”. It’d be interesting to finally see what sort of history these two had.
Filming for the drama is expected to begin on May 28. However, the cast has already been spotted attending a script read with none other than Nan Pai San Shu – the creator of the original novel who is also serving as the screenwriter for the sequel.
