It’s been more than a decade since Makiyo Kawashima, known mononymously as Makiyo, and a friend drunkenly assaulted a Taipei driver yet the Japanese-Taiwanese celebrity is once again serving up some old drama. The 40-year-old celeb claimed in a recent podcast that the driver Lin was not unconscious after the incident and even travelled overseas before seeking compensation for the assault.
Makiyo Revisits 2012 Taxi Driver Assault Case
In another one of her recent podcasts, she described the assault case as being dealt a death sentence by society. Back then, the scandal sparked public outrage. Both Makiyo and Takateru avoided avoided prison through suspended sentences, but the scandal damaged Makiyo’s career and prompted backlash. Revisiting the past incident, she claims she had gone to Mr. Lin’s residence two days prior to the settlement and that his family told her he had gone overseas for a holiday. She said she’s not afraid of being sued and hoped to use the opportunity to shed light to the truth.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has hired a lawyer to deal with the situation. According to them, Mr Lin had been dead for seven years and his physical condition at the time of the altercation was clearly recorded in his medical records. He has never even applied for a passport nor has he even been overseas. Given that it’s been years since the 2012 assault, they’re questioning her motives for bringing up a painful matter.
What Happened?
In February 2012, Makiyo and her friend Takateru Tomoyori drunkenly assaulted a Taiwanese taxi driver, sparking public outrage. Dashcam footage revealed Makiyo shouting and repeatedly kicking the driver whose injuries were severe enough that it required a visit to hospital. Although the pair initially denied the incident, video evidence says otherwise. The two were charged with assault though it seems an outside settlement of NT$ 3 million was reached between the two parties.
