Michelle Yeoh Sparks Controversy with ‘Taipei, China’ Post After Calling Taiwan a Country

A rare visit to Taipei seems to have unexpectedly drawn a lot of controversy for Malaysian Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh. The star was recently in town to celebrate the opening of Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store located at the famed Taipei 101 tower. Whilst talking to media, Michelle expressed her thanks to the American luxury jewellry house for inviting her to Taipei and said she’s very happy to come “because I do love this country very much”.  Her reference to Taiwan as a country soon sparked criticism from Chinese Netizens due to the mainland’s designation that Taiwan is a province that’s part of China.

Post-event, the star uploaded a photo of herself attending the opening on Instagram. “Thank you Tiffany for inviting us to Taipei China and amazing hospitality by Jack! So happy to see so many fans joining us at 101. So so cool cheers!” As expected, her post referring to Taipei as a part of China this time didn’t sit well with pro-Taiwan nationalists who expressed their disappointment in what they called a PR move to appease Chinese fans. Many have also called out the move, saying she could’ve just left it at “Taipei” and need not add the China bit to make it political. Meanwhile, the actress will be filming a new project in China this May; hence, some speculate that she didn’t want to find herself on the wrong side her Chinese fans.
