Several Taiwanese brands have dissociated themselves with fashion writer and influencer Jamie Tsai after her pro one-China comments caused quite a stir online. “Taiwan is part of China”, “the Republic of China no longer exists. Taiwan is just a province of China” she said, in her attempts to school Netizens commenting on her videos about freedom.
With 145k followers on Instagram, the content creator recently shared a post which she said she’d been debating whether to post or not. The content was all about a “discussion about freedom” and talked about the difference between the word “video” and “film” and its expression. Later, when she engaged with Netizens and fans in the comments, Jamie said “Taiwan is a part of China. This is a common understanding internationally. But some people are unable to accept this reality. When I go overseas, I will definitely explain to my foreign friends that the Republic of China no longer exists and Taiwan is just a province of China.” Enraged Netizens soon flooded her comments with criticism, with some questioning her political stance and some even calling for a boycott.

Social Media Reacts Differently
Elle Taiwan issued a statement saying “Jamie Tsai is no longer a columnist for Elle Taiwan and has no business partnership with the company.” Likewise, skincare brand Amor Fati who was considering working with the influencer have said thru a post on Threads that they’ve decided to move in a different direction. Additionally, the brand emphasised that “they will not work with those who do not respect Taiwan’s sovereignty.
Meanwhile, the same post would’ve been well received on Chinese social media. As Chinese officials once again reaffirmed their designation for Taiwan as a province, the topic soon went viral. It’s also common practice for numerous celebrities to repost it on social media, putting the spotlight smack on Taiwanese celebrities. Those who showed support were praised by Chinese Netizens, whilst those who remained silent faced criticism.
