China’s NRTA Introduces New Regulations for Short-Form Dramas

In response to the rapid rise of micro-dramas—short-form series with episodes lasting just a few minutes—China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) has introduced new regulations to tighten oversight of this booming industry.

Under the new rules, micro-dramas without a proper permit or filing number cannot be broadcast online. Platforms hosting these dramas now bear greater responsibility, especially for productions with investments exceeding 1 million yuan or those featured on homepage promotions, which require higher-level approval before airing. This policy aligns them with traditional dramas, subjecting them to similar levels of regulatory scrutiny. Additionally, themes involving politics, military affairs, diplomacy, and religion, etc. will undergo further content reviews. Shows without approval will receive zero promotion online.

Short-form dramas have been known to be more “extreme,” grabbing its audience with fast-moving plots that can be quite addictive. However, these new regulations could reshape the industry’s creative landscape, and its long-term impact remains to be seen.
