Veil of Shadows (月鳞绮纪) is among the dramas that kicked off filming this week. The title alone somehow reminds me of Fangs of Fortune, both of which are written and directed by Guo Jingming. It’s also has similar vibes being a mystery, fantasy costume series. They even have some of the same cast members! While there’s no official announcement yet, Guo Jingming already dropped first-look images.
Who’s Paired with Who?
Word on the street was there may have been issues over billing, as this is one with dual female leads played by Ju Jingyi and Chen Duling. I can never understand fights over billing, but I’m hoping it’s a non-issue. Ju Jingyi is also said to have told fans to not just support her but to support the director and her co-stars too. Joseph Zeng Shunxi and Tian Jiarui round up the main leads. With a cast like that, who’s paired with who in Veil of Shadows is undoubtedly a question. After all, this is one big reunion for everyone. Zeng Shunxi played a couple with Ju Jingyi in Rebirth for You and similarly with Chen Duling in A Lonely Hero’s Journey.
The visuals are already super pretty with the desert backdrop. The female leads are both in all black attires and veils covering their faces, enhancing the drama’s mystique. If we’re going solely by the two sets of photos Guo Jingming teased on social media, it may be Ju Jingyi paired with Tian Jiarui and Joseph Zeng with Chen Duling, but who really knows.

I heard this is Gui Jingming’s adaption of Painted Skin. I know he already did a short movie remake of this a few years back, which I thought was pretty interesting and not bad at all, so it’s surprising that he’s taking on the title again. He always puts his unique spin on things, so I’m curious to see how he’ll adapt the story this time.
I automatically assumed Ju Jingyi was paired with Joseph Zeng because they’re the more “seasoned” actors and have headlined several big titles (and they’ve been paired previously, as you stated), and I also assumed they were the main leads. I don’t think Ju Jingyi would settle for anything less, to be honest, given her popularity. Plus, Joseph’s styled in lighter clothes in contrast to everyone else, giving off righteous and innocent hero vibes. If he’s not the protagonist, I’m going to be so surprised. But then again, it’s Guo Jingming–who knows what he’ll do!
