Why Is He Still Single? Chinese Remake of the J-Drama Classic Stars Wallace Huo and Zhu Zhu

Why Is He Still Single? (他为什么依然单身) just dropped a teaser of what to expect in a fresh pairing that brings together Wallace Huo and Zhu Zhu. It follows the story of Yu Yu, an eccentric middle-aged bachelor who, despite reaching his forties, firmly declares that marriage is not for him. His seemingly perfect single life starts to falter when he meets Gu Ye Jia. Will he continue to enjoy the perks of bachelorhood or will she bring a new kind of sweetness into his world.

Why Is He Still Single? is a remake of Abe Hiroshi’s acclaimed 2006 J-Drama Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, which won multiple accolades, including Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Scriptwriter in Japan. The original’s mega success even led to a second season in 2019, and the 2009 Korean adaptation, The Man Who Can’t Get Married, starring Ji Jin-hee.

Abe Hiroshi’s portrayal in the original was so beloved for its blend of humor and depth he so masterfully captured that Wallace Huo who actually fits the bill as a guy in his forties will have big shoes to fill. The Chinese remake seems to be going for just that as the trailer paints the main character as a quirky “uncle,” handsome yet arrogant and conceited. Ten years of that, and what’s left is the eccentric “uncle,” yet he’s unapologetic in his ways, remaining true to his bachelor lifestyle. We barely see the heroine, played by Zhu Zhu, though she’s described as the one who’ll ultimately steal his heart. The 40-year-old actress’ casting is spot-on; she gained a loyal fanbase from her role in The Tale of Rose, where viewers were even shipping the female cast. If anyone can win over his heart, it’s definitely her.
