Fans of the popular manhua series Rakshasa Street, run (don’t walk!) because the second season of its live adaptation already relesed since September 23, 2024. Titled Hero is Back 镇魂街之热血再燃, the sequel to the 2017 original picks up where its predecessor left off from 8 years ago. So if you haven’t had the chance to watch the prequel, now’s definitely the time to dust it off for a binge to familiarise (or reacquaint) yourselves with the lore before things get more exciting.
A peek into the reimagined spirit world of Rakshasa Street through its recently released trailer shows Ao Ruipeng stepping into Jiro Wang’s shoes to play Cao Yanbing. Zhang Yuxi‘s Xia Ling and Jin Jia’s Bei Luo Shi Men make up the rest of the intrepid trio who embarks on an adventure that will take them to the Ancient Tower of Luhua. Meanwhile, how are you liking the superhero vibes their costumes are giving? It appears production has already upped their budget game which is noticeably higher given the much improved quality of the sets, CGI effects and overall production value.

To be honest, remakes and adaptations especially for one as popular as Rakshasa Street can be quite tricky. Both the manhua and the donghua versions have their fanbase so there’s definitely extra pressure for the live action version to also do well.
As with the original, the characters toggle between the modern world and the spirit world of Rakshasa where humans and spirits co-exist. However, in this installment, Cao Yanbing, Xia Ling and Bei Luo Shi Men are off to an adventure in the mysterious realm of the gods in search of answers. As they journey towards the Ancient Tower of Luhua, they encounter various challenges along the way. Not only do they have to fight against pursuers from the Hall of Heroes, they must also defeat four powerful gods somehow.
