We always hear about young actors lucky enough to have made it big after that breakout role put their names on the map. But that’s not often the case for many artists. 48-year-old Zhang Songwen is the perfect example of that. Luckily for him, the actor finally caught a break in his late forties in what is now known as his breakout role when he portrayed Gao Qi Qiang in The Knockout. Thanks to all the attention the role has given him, Zhang Songwen is now headlining his very first costume historical drama titled Riverside Code at Qingming Festival 清明上河图密码.
The series is adapted from author Ye Wenbiao’s novel of the same name telling the story of Zhao Buyou’s extraordinary family of super sleuths who can be counted on to solve strange cases. Set during the Northern Song dynasty period, Zhang Songwen plays Zhao Buyou, a low level clerk living an ordinary life with his wife Wen Yue. Husband and wife live together with three more family members. In a lucky accident of sorts, their family stumbled upon a new career of investigating cases after they managed to solve a tricky mystery together. Thus began their foray into the world of solving curious crimes and keeping the citizens of Bianliang safe.
Zhang Songwen began his acting career in the noughties, but despite graduating from the prestigious Beijing Film Academy and equipped with some pretty solid acting skills, most of the roles he’d landed were in the supporting lead capacity. It was only in last year’s The Knockout where he shined portraying Gao Qiqiang that he got the attention he truly deserves.

I’m happy for him! It is about time that drama producers start valuing skills over looks.
We could get a lot more interesting dramas to watch if they replaced the league of clone-like, effeminate pretty boys with real actors.

Absolutely ! But nah, only a few look effeminate. But yeah, I know what you mean. Powdered, white faces. Not just actors, but actresses as well. Idol actors, traffic actors, that type. Tired of the internet raving how excellent they are, when they are no where near there.
A number of older ones are catching their big breaks in recent years and that’s a very good thing.
