Ten years after his drug scandal, Jaycee Chan, the son of legendary action star Jackie Chan, marks his return to the industry with a brand new music video chronicling his painful struggles to get back on the straight and narrow. Titled “In Search for Darkness,” the piece is a very personal one for the 41-year-old who wrote and composed this after 14 years. Interestingly, the MV was released on the 10th anniversary of his arrest for drug possession on August 14, perhaps to signal a fresh start?
Through the Darkness
The MV which he co-directed and filmed with Golden Horse winning director Su Zhexian depicts what he went through – the confusion, the setbacks, falling into the abyss, his regrets and his eventual emergence into the light after a period of darkness. This he attributed to his family who never left his side. Interspersed with the scenes they filmed for the video are clips from Jaycee’s life, his family and even footage from his 2015 public apology. There’s also a scene of him looking at his wrist revealing the date of his arrest – August 14, 2014.
Jaycee Chan served six months behind bars for marijuana possession and for letting people use drugs in his Beijing apartment. It was a huge scandal that also involved Taiwanese actor Kai Ko as both tested positive for marijuana. Whereas the offence merited a longer stay in prison, he received a reduced sentence for cooperating fully with the police. Both their careers came to a halt nonetheless though Kai Ko has since made a successful comeback.
