“Lin Jiang Xian” Plot: What We Know So Far

iQIYI series Lin Jiang Xian 临江仙 has been teasing fans with a lot of tidbits from new promos to a music video teaser. Despite the many “sneak peeks” and this being a xianxia based on an original screenplay, the plot has been shrouded in mystery. Producer Yu Zheng admits it’s actually hard to describe, that the male lead is somewhat like Goblin and the heroine being unlike any other. In his words, the drama unfolds in three parts:

1. Comedy-Mystery: The first part combines humor and mystery, somewhat like You From Another Star, but set in heaven. It’s pure romance, he says.
2. Illusion in the Human Realm: The second part is expected to deliver major angst.
3. Butterfly Restart: The third part has no limits and seems to hint at a butterfly effect of some sort.

“Spoilers” About the Plot and Characters

Bai Lu will play two characters as Hua Ruyue and Li Qingyue opposite Joseph Zeng Shunxi as Bai Jiusi. After undergoing a parting, the loss of her son, and being tortured and killed, Hua Ruyue is bent on killing Bai Jiusi, the man who sealed her powers. However, she is no match for him and eventually turns to ashes. Is Bai Jiusi truly heartless and ungrateful? It appears so as he is about to get married. Yet, the woman he marries looks exactly like Hua Ruyue. Li Qingyue, a lively and adorable character often overlooked by others, including her master who can’t remember her name, has her fate changed overnight when Bai Jiusi, the great master of the Nine Heavens, decides to marry her.

Yu Zheng had said it’s not about rebirth, nor trials in the mortal realm. He reveals the story of ‘Lin Jiang Xian’ is not about multiple lives but a fierce debate. The plot-driven narrative has the hero and heroine repeatedly returning to the past to justify their actions, much like in court dramas. Are you intrigued yet?
