Married couple Huang Zitao and Xu Yiyang once again took over Chinese social media today after the latter addressed speculation surrounding their family, following their public reveal that they had become parents nearly two years ago.

Xu Yiyang Says She Gave Birth Herself

Amid rumors that she had a child through surrogacy, which is prohibited in China, she explicitly stated, “I gave birth to the child myself.” She also shared details about the delivery, explaining that she underwent a C-section because the baby was in a breech position. The 29-year-old actress revealed that their son was born in 2024 and is now a little over two years old, adding that he is tall for his age. “We only have one child, and I gave birth to him myself. I hope everyone will stop spreading malicious rumors,” she said.

Xu Yiyang explained that she had chosen not to keep things private because she was extremely vulnerable at the time, frequently crying over little things. Although Tao was eager to share the news, Xu Yiyang asked him not to, and he respected her wishes. They reason they decided to make the announcement now was because their child would soon be starting school, and not because they want to generate buzz for their livestream sales, as some have suggested.

Huang Zitao Faces Scrutiny Over Son’s Citizenship

Meanwhile, netizens also speculated that the couple’s child might have acquired U.S. citizenship by birthright. Rumors surrounding the pregnancy began circulating in 2024 after the couple was spotted visiting a hospital in the United States, prompting speculation that their child was subsequently born there. It sparked criticism towards Tao and his patriotic public image.

Addressing the controversy, Xu Yiyang said, “Regarding the more sensitive matter about us, the two of us are Chinese, and our child is Chinese too. I hope everyone can understand. Our child will grow up and receive his education in China. He is Chinese through and through. This is our position, and we will never change it. If the rumors are based on these claims, we deny them. As Chinese people, if we don’t love our country, what else is there to love?”

Netizens Remain Skeptical

The couple has faced backlash and has been accused of lying when it came to their dating status and now childbirth. Xu Yiyang teared up at one point during the livestream, explaining that she was touched by a comforting message from a friend. Tao happened to appear at that moment and immediately asked, “Who bullied my wife?” He attempted to voice his frustration, questioning, “Who would share their family matters with strangers?” though she quickly covered his mouth to stop him from continuing.

Despite addressing each rumor, some remain skeptical. Others have pointed out that Xu Yiyang did not directly clarify whether their child holds U.S. citizenship. Instead, she simply said that their family is Chinese.
