Luo Zheng, who entered showbiz through the 2018 survival show Idol Producer, unexpectedly went viral after sharing that he only had 4,800 yuan (about US$670) left in his bank account. Many netizens found his humorous personality endearing and also dubbed him “the struggling celebrity in China’s entertainment industry,” challenging the perception that all actors and idols earn high salaries.

On July 30, Luo Zheng surprised fans with a livestream that attracted more than 100,000 viewers. Clearly overwhelmed by the sudden attention, he repeatedly said, “I really don’t deserve this. I’ll kowtow to everyone.” During the livestream, he also revealed that his highest annual income was 80,000 yuan (around US$11,000), joking that it was less than the salary of a security guard. Since his story went viral, Luo Zheng has gained more than 600,000 new followers in just one week. His livestream also drew the attention of brands sending virtual gifts during the broadcast. It’s landed him on the Chinese hot search over finding fame again as many became supportive of the actor after learning about his financial struggles due to his former agency.

Amid accusations that he’s deliberately portraying himself as poor for publicity, Luo Zheng’s uncle has spoken out saying that Luo Zheng has lived an extremely frugal lifestyle for years.. “Nothing has changed since he became popular again. He’s exactly the same with our family as he always was,” his uncle said. “We all know about the millions of yuan in debt. But he’s a very strong person, he never complains or tries to gain sympathy in private.” Luo Zheng also declined brand collaborations during the livestream, telling companies: “If you have work for me, just contact me directly.”
