Kennedy Xu Lei, the screenwriter for Archives: The Nanyang Mystery (南部档案) and the author of the novel on which the series is based, better known by his pen name Nan Pai San Shu, has revealed that a second season is being planned. He said, “We hope to move into the creation of the second season as soon as possible.” Apparently, iQIYI has reached out to him to discuss the drama. He also joked, “The emotional scenes don’t really need more promotion anymore” and hopes fans can share the funny parts instead. After all, the story has been heartbreaking, what with a “death” so early on. [SPOILERS AHEAD]
Adapted from the prequel set in the Daomu Biji universe, Archives: The Nanyang Mystery follows the meticulous Zhang Haixia (played by Ding Yuxi) and the impulsive and fearless Zhang Hailou (played by Zhang Xincheng) as they investigate a series of bizarre murders connected to Nanyang deities.
However, many where shocked when Ding Yuxi’s character was suddenly killed off in episode 8 as he dies trying to protect Steven Zhang’s Zhang Hailou. Considering that Zhang Haixia’s legs were severely injured in an explosion, leaving him confined to a wheelchair and then his death early on in the series, his character has been heartbreaking for fans. Granted that he “lives” again, but his character’s trajectory continues to give hints that things won’t end well.
Fans would no doubt welcome a sequel and have been calling for the original trio, which includes Jiang Peiyao, to return. Some fans are also hoping that Zhang Haixia will also receive a gentler, kinder ending, one he truly deserves. The second season remains only a verbal statement from the author and nothing has been finalized.
