Former Hong Kong cinema goddess Joey Wong has opened up about her personal life in a recent interview, revealing that she has not been in another relationship since her long-running romance with Taiwanese singer Chyi Chin ended. Host Li Dan asked the 59-year-old Wong about her most recent romance, to which she laughingly answered, “That was the last one!” Rather than naming any names, she simply confirmed it was the one, which had been widely known to the public.
Joey Wong and Chyi Chin began dating in 1987. Their relationship became one of the most talked-about celebrity romances back then, but their on-again, off-again romance finally ended in 2002 when she was 35, following controversy surrounding Chyi Chin and a lawsuit due to a child from a previous relationship.

Looking back on the relationship, Joey Wong described it as a “karmic debt” that she needed to settle. She said she now feels that the debt has been repaid. Wong also offered a philosophical perspective on romantic relationships. In her view, love itself can exist, but people should be careful about becoming trapped by the emotional complications that can accompany it, including possessiveness, jealousy and attachment. She also expressed goodwill toward her former partner, wishing him well and saying that her wish is for him to fulfill his hopes and dreams. Chyi Chin later married mainland Chinese singer Sun Liya in 2010. The couple went on to have a son and a daughter.
For years, stories have circulated suggesting that Wong withdrew from the entertainment industry in 2004 because she was devastated by her relationship with Chyi Chin and eventually left for Canada. Wong rejected that story and said she had already begun thinking about leaving the industry when she was around 28. After completing the 1993 film Green Snake, she became increasingly tired of the demanding lifestyle associated with showbiz that it left her questioning her identity. Wong has since established a much quieter life in Vancouver, Canada. She has also embraced Buddhism and focuses on wellness and healthcare.
